Zoom Outage Disrupts Global Services; Dark Storm Team Claims Responsibility
On April 16, 2025, Zoom experienced a significant global outage that disrupted its video conferencing services, website, and application. The issue began around 2:40 PM ET, with users encountering "Unable to connect" errors and the zoom.us domain displaying a 502 Bad Gateway error. Downdetector reported that outage reports peaked at 67,280 users by 3:01 PM ET. The disruption lasted nearly two hours, with services restored by approximately 5 PM ET.
Dark Storm Team Claims Responsibility
During the outage, a hacking group known as Dark Storm Teamclaimed responsibility for the disruption. In a post on Telegram, the group stated it had launched a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack against Zoom. Dark Storm Team has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on other major platforms, including Elon Musk's X.
Understanding DDoS Attacks
A Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt the normal functioning of a targeted server, service, or network by overwhelming it with a flood of internet traffic. These attacks can cause significant service disruptions and are challenging to mitigate due to the distributed nature of traffic sources.
Zoom's Response and Ongoing Investigation
Service has now been restored after the earlier outage, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding.
Zoom acknowledged the outage, attributing it to "domain name resolution issues" affecting multiple services. However, the company has not yet confirmed whether the disruption resulted from a cyberattack. Zoom stated that it is investigating the incident and working to ensure the stability and security of its services.
