Intel to Cut Over 20% of Workforce Under New CEO Lip-Bu Tan

Intel is preparing to lay off more than 20% of its global workforce. The estimated number is over 21,000 employees, as part of a significant restructuring initiative led by newly appointed CEO Lip-Bu Tan. This move is intended to streamline operations, eliminate bureaucratic inefficiencies, and refocus the company on its engineering roots.

Tan is implementing a strategy to flatten Intel's organizational structure. This includes reducing layers of middle management and having key chip groups report directly to him. The layoffs are expected to be officially announced later this week.

Addressing Financial Challenges and Competitive Pressures

The decision to reduce the workforce follows Intel's previous layoff in August 2024, where the company cut 15% of its jobs as part of a $10 billion cost-reduction plan. At the end of 2024, Intel employed approximately 108,900 individuals.

The current layoffs are driven by high operational costs, shrinking profit margins in the PC and data center segments, and the company's expensive transition toward AI chips, an area where it lags behind competitors like Nvidia.

Strategic Shift Towards AI and Innovation

Under Tan's leadership, Intel is also restructuring its AI strategy to better compete in the rapidly evolving semiconductor industry.

The company aims to enhance its focus on innovation and skills to regain its competitive edge. Tan has emphasized the need for "tough decisions" to position Intel for long-term success.
