FBI Alert: Protect Yourself from the Latest 'Smishing' Text Scams

FBI Alert Smishing (1)
The FBI has issued a nationwide alert regarding a surge in "smishing" attacks targeting both iPhone and Android users. "Smishing" combines "SMS" and "phishing" referring to fraudulent text messages designed to extract sensitive information such as passwords or credit card details.

Recent Smishing Scams

Recent scams have involved fake toll payment notifications and delivery service alerts, with over 10,000 domains registered to support these malicious activities.
In these schemes, victims receive deceptive text messages claiming overdue toll balances or missed deliveries, telling them to click on a link to resolve the issue. Clicking these links can lead to financial theft or identity fraud.

Although there are security measures like Apple's iMessage blocking suspicious links, scammers trick users by instructing them to copy and paste URLs. This kind of scenario makes detection more challenging.

How to Protect Yourself

  1. Delete suspicious texts immediately: Do not engage with or respond to uninvited messages requesting personal or financial information.
  2. Avoid clicking on unknown links: Avoid clicking on links in unrequested messages, as they may lead to malicious websites designed to steal your information.
  3. Verify claims through official channels: If you receive a message about an unpaid toll or delivery issue, contact the company directly using official contact information to confirm the legitimacy of the claim.
  4. Report smishing attempts: Forward suspicious messages to 7726 (SPAM) and file a report with the Federal Trade Commission or the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center.
By staying alert and following these precautions, you can reduce the risk of falling victim to smishing scams and protecting your personal information.
