DISA’s 2025 Data Plan: Stronger, Smarter, More Secure

The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) has declared its data strategy for fiscal years 2025-2027. This plan aims to enhance cybersecurity, optimize data utilization, and integrate advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to support the Department of Defense's (DoD) operational requirements.
 

Alignment with DoD Initiatives

DISA's strategy aligns with several key DoD initiatives, including the Fulcrum strategy, the Chief Data and Artificial Intelligence Office’s Data, Analytics, and AI Adoption Strategy, and the DISA Next Strategy for FY 25-29. This alignment ensures a precise approach to data management and technological advancement across the defense sector.

Three Key Lines of Effort

  1. Strengthening Data Architecture and Governance: DISA plans to treat data as a strategic asset by simplifying data infrastructure, promoting data sharing, and enhancing data maturity through strong governance and management. This includes adopting zero-trust principles to maintain data protection.Zero Trust
  2. Integrating Advanced Analytics: The agency aims to accelerate the adoption of AI and machine learning across its services. These changes facilitate data-driven decision-making and advance interoperability frameworks and data standards.   3. Cultivating a Data-Centric Culture: DISA plans to empower its workforce with the necessary skills, tools, and training to utilize the full potential of data. This effort includes fostering collaboration, promoting continuous learning, and embedding data stewardship responsibilities within the agency.

Caroline Kuharske, DISA's Chief Data Officer, emphasized the significance of this strategy, stating that-

"by focusing on strong governance, advanced analytics, and a culture of data-driven decision-making, DISA is not only enhancing its operational capabilities but also positioning itself to lead in innovation and efficiency."
