Samsung Electronics co-CEO Han Jong-hee Dies of Heart Attack at 63
Samsung Electronics, one of the world’s leading technology companies, has informed the sudden passing of its co-CEO Han Jong-hee at the age of 63 due to a heart attack. Han, who led the company’s consumer electronics and mobile devices division, was hospitalized on Tuesday, where he succumbed to cardiac arrest.
A Legacy in Consumer Electronics
Han Jong-hee joined Samsung in 1988 and steadily rose through the ranks. He played a crucial role in shaping the company’s success in the global television market. In 2011, he became the head of the product research and development team for Samsung’s visual display division. His leadership was instrumental in making Samsung a dominant force in the TV industry.
In 2022, Han was appointed as vice chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics, overseeing the company’s consumer electronics and mobile devices division. He also served as one of Samsung’s executive board members.
Last Public Appearance and Industry Challenges
Just last week, Han chaired Samsung’s annual general meeting, addressing shareholder concerns regarding the company’s stock performance and its struggle to keep up with the artificial intelligence (AI) boom. Under his leadership, Samsung faced growing competition from Apple in the smartphone sector and from SK Hynix and TSMC in the semiconductor market.
During the meeting, Han acknowledged the difficulties Samsung had encountered in the AI semiconductor market, stating:
“First and foremost, I sincerely apologize for the recent stock performance not meeting your expectations. Over the past year, our company failed to adequately respond to the rapidly evolving AI semiconductor market.”
Succession and Company Response
Samsung has yet to announce a successor for Han’s role. However, Jun Young-hyun, appointed co-CEO in November last year, will now serve as the company’s sole CEO. Jun has a strong background in Samsung’s semiconductor business, which has been struggling to regain its competitive edge.
In a statement, Samsung Electronics expressed deep sorrow over Han’s passing:
“Our deepest condolences are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. Han’s contributions to Samsung’s growth and global leadership in consumer electronics will be remembered.”
Samsung’s Future Outlook
Han’s passing comes at a critical time for Samsung. The company has been struggling with declining earnings and stiff competition in the semiconductor industry. It has lost its position as the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer to Apple and has been trailing in the race for AI-driven chip development.
Despite these challenges, Samsung remains a dominant force in the global technology sector. Now with Jun Young-hyun's leadership, the company is expected to double down on innovation and strategic investments to ensure continued growth.
Han Jong-hee is survived by his wife and three children. His contributions to Samsung and the tech industry will be remembered as a significant part of the company’s history.
