AMD to Manufacture EPYC CPUs at TSMC's Arizona Plant

TN- AMD to Manufacture EPYC CPUs at TSMC's Arizona Plant
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is set to begin manufacturing its fifth-generation EPYC processors at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC) new facility in Arizona. This marks the first time AMD's chips will be produced within the United States. This step indicates a significant move to diversify its supply chain to cover up escalating global trade tensions.

AMD's 'Venice' EPYC Chips

The upcoming EPYC processor codenamed "Venice," will be the first high-performance computing (HPC) product to use TSMC's advanced 2nm (N2) process. AMD has successfully validated chip production at TSMC’s Arizona Fab 21, with a launch planned for next year. This milestone marks a major step in AMD’s commitment to U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and deepens its strategic alliance with TSMC.

AMD and TSMC Strategic Partnership

“TSMC has been a key partner for many years, and our deep collaboration with their R&D and manufacturing teams has enabled AMD to consistently deliver leadership products that push the limits of high-performance computing,”
-said Dr. Lisa Su, Chair and CEO of AMD.
She also added that -
“Being a lead HPC customer for TSMC’s N2 process and for TSMC Arizona Fab 21 are great examples of how we are working closely together to drive innovation and deliver the advanced technologies that will power the future of computing.”

Navigating Trade Tensions

This move comes in response to increasing trade tensions and tariffs affecting the semiconductor industry. By shifting production to the U.S., AMD aims to mitigate risks associated with global supply chain disruptions. The company's recent acquisition of ZT Systems, a major supplier of AI servers, further strengthens its American presence.

Supply Chain Resilience

TSMC's investment in the Arizona facility is part of a larger $100 billion commitment to U.S. manufacturing, aiming to address concerns over supply chain vulnerabilities and national security. The Arizona plant is expected to play a crucial role in meeting the growing demand for advanced semiconductors in various sectors, including data centers and artificial intelligence.
