Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has reported that approximately 2.3 million credit and debit card details have been leaked on the dark web. This breach increases infostealer malware infections, which have compromised nearly 26 million Windows devices between 2023 and 2024.
Rise of Infostealer Malware
Infostealer malware is designed to extract sensitive information such as financial data, credentials, and cookies from infected devices. This data is compiled into log files and distributed within underground communities on the dark web. Notably, approximately every 14th infostealer infection results in stolen credit card information.
Prevalent Threats: Redline and Risepro
Redline infostealer is the most widespread one. During 2024, it accounted for 34% of total infections. Another rapidly growing threat is Risepro, which primarily targets banking card details, passwords, and cryptocurrency wallet data.
Risepro's share of total infections surged from 1.4% in 2023 to almost 23% in 2024. This malware often spreads under the cover of key generators, software cracks, and game modifications.
Protective Measures
Monitor Financial Statements: Regularly review bank and credit card statements for unauthorized transactions.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Adding an extra layer of security can prevent unauthorized access even if credentials are compromised.
Conduct Security Scans: Regularly run comprehensive security scans on all devices to detect and remove malware.
Conclusion
The threatening increase in infostealer malware infections highlights the critical need for strengthened cybersecurity awareness and proactive measures. Individuals and organizations must remain vigilant to protect their financial and personal information.
